History of Babas & Nyonyas
Nyonya Kebaya
Baju Lok Chuan
The Nyonya and Babas, known as Peranakan 'Straits-Born Chinese are unique people with a unique cutlture. They're comprised of the descendants of the early Chinese settlers in Melaka. Through assimilation with the local Malays, they have adopted traces of malay customs, dressing, and cooking styles which gradually evolve to the unique traits of the Baba & Nyonya culture we know of today.Ladies, known as Nyonya, wear the Nyonya Kebaya. It is a beautiful embroidered blouse with the top being of Malay origin that has been adapted to a shorter length than a Malay Kebaya. The overall look is tidy, meticulous, neat, and charming.Gentlemen, known as Babas, typically wear the Baju Lok Chuan, which is a Chinese-style long-sleeved shirt paired with trousers. This attire is often complemented by a batik sarong wrapped around the waist, reflecting a blend of Chinese and Malay influences. The Babas' attire exudes a sense of dignity, elegance, and cultural pride. The Nyonyas are also known to be very particular with clean lines when it comes to preperation of food. This is a practice that's upheld through generations.
